Ripples in Oil

So this week I wanted to throw out a little art that I've been working on.  However, instead of simply slapping down the one piece I finished I thought it might be interesting to show how it started.  For one thing, maybe what I think is the best end isn't.  The other is that I hate the idea that anything emerges fully formed.  It's a common myth of creativity that the best product comes out on the first try.  Sure there might a few revisions, change of contrast, move a few commas, take out a minute of footage, but the initial product is just gold in need of polishing.  The real truth is that no one creates something special in one fell swoop.

Now, I won't be going into deep detail, holding hands on the way through this effect, or those digital brush strokes.  What I am going to do is show the art I started with followed by the progression of that piece.

I didn't begin with a central concept.  When it comes to artwork I rarely do.  Concrete ideas tend to get in my way because I worry too much about the reality surrounding them.  For instance, I don't have the mechanical skill necessary to draw a vivid shark, so will be distracted by an inability to create a real life portrait.  But art isn't about having ever tool in the box.  It's about working within the depths of limitation; if the shark isn't working, don't film the shark.  As such I just start creating with a loose concept in the back of my mind -- paint a mood, silhouette, etc.  Sometimes this means hours spent on a canvas, digital or otherwise, that yields nothing.  It's when the abstract imagery tosses an idea into my head I finally get to run with it.  In a way it feels like I'm stumbling across what my subconscious wants me to make.

Picture
I started by taking the center portion of this and stretching it out with a kind of mirage/mirror effect.  The original intention being to see how many times I could replicate a series of images, perhaps creating some sort of mandala.  That led to the next variation...

Picture
... in turn inspiring a desire to fool around with some distortion effects.

Picture
From here I explored color options and adjusted light levels until I got nearer the final product.

Picture
But something still seemed to be missing, so I did a simple thing, I rotated the canvas.  It's amazing how the feeling of an image changes merely by adjusting the angle it's viewed at.

Picture
To be honest I like the vertical take as much as this horizontal one.  That said, I leave it to you to pick which you enjoy the most.  I know what I see, but that may not be what you do, and I think it's our individual perspectives which really make the pieces interesting.

Not Again!

Hello friends.  This week has been delightfully busy.  Work is progressing on the Beerfinger novel, and plans are progressing to bring some more video content to the site.  Meanwhile, I put together this simple video for you all to enjoy.  I won't lie.  Because of some trouble with my video editing software I was forced to clip a bit from a previous vid, and I apologize for the apparent laziness.  Although, if I may, seems like a chance to remind people of some previous weird work.  In any event, I hope you enjoy NOT AGAIN!

Daddy's Coming Home for Christmas (with a shotgun)

I wrote this because it popped into my head one evening.  Call it a grim shower thought.  It isn't hard to imagine someone losing their mind during the holiday season.  I could get preachy here.  Something like:  This is the time of year we do our best to pretend that all the problems in the world vanish for a few hours.  It's a chance to live in denial:  Unwrap your present sweetie, there are no children forced to commit genocide in Africa.  However, that kind of thing annoying the Hell out of me, and it isn't true.  I wrote this because it's just the way I'm wired.  I don't see the smiles at Giftmas.  I see strained expressions determined to hide from horrifying credit card statements screaming on the horizon; the lonely people wearily buying booze in bulk with bags of razorblades.  This time of the year drives people mad in more ways than one, and madness is what this site is all about.

This is about a man who's can't take anymore.  The jolly cheeriness surrounding the Giftmas season just doesn't apply to him.  He's been laid off.  He's been drinking his way to the abyss.  On the drive home, seeing the houses lit up so festive, he snaps.  He remembers the shotgun in the trunk of his car.  His gift for his family is a shotgun blast sparing them a grim tomorrow.  This is the song he hears in his head; that he sings to himself.

I'm sure it'll offend someone.  And if you know that someone, well, send it to them.  Merry Giftmas.

P.S.  THIS IS NOT AN ENDORSEMENT OF VIOLENCE.  It is intended as dark humor, a grim situation juxtaposed against an otherwise cheery setting.

Peppermint

Greetings,

Currently I'm battling a touch of the plague, so wasn't able to finish the vocals on the Giftmas song I've been working on.  The instrumentals are done.  With any luck I'll be able to have it ready for Xmas Eve.  However, that's no reason to steer away from the season.  As such I put together this bit of artwork.  At first glance it seems like some kind of Dali inspired alien landscape, or perhaps a more literal mind will spot a melting peppermint in a stirred and spinning mug of hot dark chocolate, maybe even coffee -- your personal taste spiced your personal way.  Whatever your vision inclines toward there's no denying at least I didn't punk out, and do some Star Wars related post to bait for viewers.  Enjoy.

Shores of Lunacy

Over the end credits of THE MUSICIAN a strange number played.  The song is called Shores of Lunacy, and I've had a few requests to hear the entire piece.  As such, here is the song in its entirety.  At first a seemingly standard classical number, the song soon takes some interesting turns.  Ride it all the way to the end, and let us know what you think.

Do You Miss Your Face?

I decided to try something a bit different this week.  Granted the title of this piece might imply otherwise, but I wanted to put together something, shall we say, upbeat.  Although I enjoy the twisted and unusual, especially if it can produce a grim laugh, there's something to be said for adjusting the view to something more light hearted.  So it is, without further blathering, I present Do You Miss Your Face?  A simple music video with a snappy groove, something to listen to while switching your brain off with a tall glass of brain fog (for brain fog proper Honesty is Not Contagious recommends either a Manhattan, or a shot of Chartreuse with a glass of champagne).  Enjoy.

Dark Side of Light

Hello.  Sorry for the delayed post.  I've been busy wrapping up the post production on the first Honesty is Not Contagious short film.  With any luck that should be along soon.  However, without further adieu, here's a little music to get you through the day.

Alice Dobbs Overture

Part 2 of Never Better is coming together nicely, but won't be fully ready until tomorrow.  However, that doesn't mean the creepy shouldn't flow.  This piece of atmospheric music is meant to keep the spooky simmering, and like any good overture it provides a sample sense of what's to come:  a grim slog into a terrifying world where death seems the only escape; at least preferable to the nightmare that will drag you screaming into suffering.

Howl Across the Void

Hello Friends,

I've been working hard to put together some short stories, particularly with Halloween right around the corner.  At the moment, though, post production for a short film has been eating up a bit more of my time than expected.  That's right, Honesty is Not Contagious is working to provide our first of what we hope to be many short films.

As such I've been developing a lot of music tracks.  Some work, some don't.  In addition, working on the films gave me a chance to get better acquainted with some new video effects.  I suppose then you could say the following video is sort of an experiment with visuals as well as music, but I think you'll still be entertained.

Creepy writing is on the way!  Perhaps something entitled Howl Across the Void?  Stay tuned.
