Story Sessions... When Heavy Metal Soared... quiet but busy.

It’s been another quiet but busy month. On the one hand, I’ve been able to finish a lot of projects. That means more stories to try selling as well as articles in the pipeline. The other side of the coin is a lackluster acceptance rate. Although one can’t expect to sell every story that goes out, it sucks when things become sluggish. However, live performances seem to be on the uptick lately.

This month I had the pleasure of doing some nonfiction storytelling at Chicago’s Golden Dagger. It was a Story Sessions live show, a group I’ve been lucky enough to be hired by in the past. Last October I delivered a bit of nonfiction true crime, and on May 15th, I got to hit the crowd with a tense tale about guns, family, and the horrors of Christmas. Follow the Soundcloud link below to hear, not only my piece, but the other fabulous tellers sharing their stories.

As a bonus, artist Jules Darling was there composing images based on the tales told. What came about because of mine is here. If you like it, be sure to check out Darling’s web site to see their other amazing artwork.

The fine folks over at 25YL saw fit to publish another of my articles. This month focused on animation. So, I took a dive into the 1981 cult classic Heavy Metal. It’s an animated anthology of several pulpy pieces of fiction. The article explores the history of animation in the United States and shows how Heavy Metal helped adult-animation become so ubiquitous. After all, there used to be a time the idea of a cartoon aimed at mature audiences was considered ludicrous. In a way, it’s a historical piece about the history of censorship, but it’s also how important pushing the boundaries of acceptability can be.

That’s all for now. Be sure to tune in next month to see what else has been happening. Hopefully, I’ll have more fiction to serve up, publications printing and such. Otherwise, stay safe, be kind, and embrace the mad absurdity of existence. Cheers!
