February has been a singular month. Only a few things arrived but there’s plenty to enjoy as well as look forward to. It’s the depth of what’s available now that pleases me the most.
First off, after lots of hard work, the urban fantasy anthology Decades of San Cicaro is available. Months back I got accepted to this assortment of magical realism set in the city of San Cicaro. For those unfamiliar, San Cicaro is a fictive place where the weird and wonderful thrives. At times mysterious, occasionally horrifying, and always unreal, this amazing world is alive courtesy of Thunderbird Studios.

For a while now, they’ve been putting out San Cicaro anthologies. Decades of San Cicaro now expands the mythology across time, telling stories that have happened throughout the city’s history. My own contribution based on real historical elements involves an individual escaping the Lavender Scare of the late Fifties. Arriving in San Cicaro around 1961, they take up a job at the animal control and soon encounter a variety of mystical creatures.
I really enjoyed delving into this project. It allowed me to utilize my talents as a trained historian as well as create a deeply personal story. “Animal Control” is an absolutely human tale, and while I don’t want to spoil anything, I assure you it’ll pull at your heart strings more than once. I spent weeks working on this, not just the initial draft but taking notes from editors, and count this as one of my favorite pieces I’ve written.

Next up, I wrote a retrospective about the film adaptation of the musical Cabaret. Released fifty years ago, it’s a story as relevant today as it was upon release. My main delight writing this piece stems from the history behind the musical. The article explores the origins of the story overall, but rather than rehash all those interesting tidbits, I’ll just let it speak for itself.
