This is GWAR! ... Questions abound... Sewer Gators... Unreal

Last month filled out with some great moments. I got to do my first interview, watched and reviewed a fabulous documentary about the notorious rockers GWAR, then closed the month getting some solid cheese for a bad movie night.

Kicking things off, being able to review This is GWAR! really put a cherry on top of the month. Mainly because that led into one fantastic moment after another. First of all, checking out the flick rekindled my interest in the band. It’s been a while since I seriously sat down to listen to Gwar. Sure, the occasional nostalgia round about leads by the band, but it’s been too long since I really sat down delving into their discography.

Partly to help set the mood for writing the review, I reacquainted myself with tunes like “The Salminizer”, “Saddam A Go-Go”, and “Bring Back the Bomb”. Lyrically, Gwar is a hard band to beat, but then consider the creative risk adding a trumpet section to a hard rock song. Gifted musicians creating a full theatrical experience—it was a pleasure returning to some of these gems. And the documentary really is a treat for fans as well as anyone curious enough to give it a chance. More on that below.

Second, because I got to review This is GWAR! I actually got to interview a member of the band. Matt Maguire offered a few minutes of his time. Below are links to the video as well as the transcribed version. The written one is a bit condensed and features less of me thank crispy chicken Christ.

This was my first interview ever. I like to think I did alright, though I do wish I’d done a few things differently. Preparing questions in advance certainly helped, and Matt even got caught pleasantly off-guard by the depth of research. Unfortunately, because I’m in the midst of a move I didn’t have my best audio equipment. Still, it all sounds fine thanks in no small part to some audio work by our resident expert at Horror Obsessive. I just wish I’d been able to give more gold from the get-go.

Finally, I caught a delightfully terrible flick called Sewer Gators. The review is below which was a great reminder how much fun it is to write bad reviews. The movie isn’t absolute garbage. I do believe it would do well with a beer and a pizza crowd looking to have an alligator themed evening. More than anything, I enjoyed spicing the article up with as much Louisiana lingo as possible.

I’m always on the prowl for more deliciously deplorable films rotisserie roasted over a dumpster fire. Though that said, my hat is off to makers of the movie. As far as I can tell, they set out to make a trashy flick and they got it. If you decide to include it an upcoming bad movie night, perhaps take the time to fashion an alligator cocktail.

Consider:

  • Vodka (3 oz.)
  • Triple Sec (2 oz.)
  • Orange Juice (1 oz.)
  • Midori (2 oz.)
  • Lemonade (1 oz.)
  • Sour Mix (1 oz.)

That’s it for now. Stay tuned for more roundups. Regarding fiction, I’m still waiting to hear back from a few publications. I may also finally have the free time to do some audio things for the long neglected Youtube channel. We’ll see since I am literally one or two chapters from finishing my novel. I know I’ve been mentioning that on and off for over a year, but the end really is at hand.

Otherwise, if you’re in the Chicagoland area, I’ll be performing some live literature at the Gold Dagger as part of the Unreal Anniversary show. Fell free to join us as this fiction-focused mic turns six years old. I’ve been happy to lend my words and voice to performances with them for at least three years now. It promises to be a good time. But if you can’t make, well, stay safe, be kind, and stay weird. Cheers!
